For the first edition of The Listening Room a new bimonthly series where we spotlight songs we genuinely can’t stop thinking about we wanted to feature a track that feels huge both emotionally and sonically.
This month’s pick is Jun Kurbee’s cinematic ballad If the Multiverse Is Real?
The song explores the idea of alternate realities and the emotional weight of wondering whether somewhere out there exists a version of yourself that got things right. Through dramatic vocals and an emotional build that feels straight out of a movie soundtrack, the track balances heartbreak, longing, and hope all at once.
One lyric that really stood out to me was:
“A place we don’t fight / A place where I don’t hide”
When I asked Jun where the idea for the song first came from, he told me it actually started from seeing:
“a funny TikTok of two guys joking about what if the multiverse were real.”
But the idea quickly became much more personal for him.
“I wanted to capture that feeling, the curiosity, the longing, and the ‘what if’… and I hope this song translates that emotion well.”
Honestly, I think it does perfectly.
The song also features Doff, who Jun revealed is actually a friend from college. Interestingly, the feature wasn’t planned from the start either.
“As the song evolved, I realized it could be even more powerful with another featured singer offering a different perspective.”
That contrast between both voices really helps give the song its emotional weight and cinematic feeling.
I also asked Jun about his writing and production process, and he explained that there isn’t really one set formula for him when creating music.
“Sometimes it’s the melody, sometimes it’s the lyrics, and occasionally both come simultaneously.”
He also shared that the emotional build and sound direction of Die With a Smile by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga helped inspire parts of the track sonically, which honestly makes so much sense once you hear the scale of the song.
If you’re into emotional ballads with dramatic builds and lyrics that hit a little too hard on your journey home, If the Multiverse Is Real? is definitely worth adding to your playlist.
